Spring is a 3D RTS engine that is entirely licensed under the GPL.[1] The latest release is version 0.82.5.1 released on 2010-09-06. It is written in the C++ programming language and uses the SDL/OpenGL and OpenAL API.[2]
Mods traditionally constitute additions to a game that change the way it works. However, the term Mod when used in connection to the Spring project refers to a game in its own right that runs on the Spring engine.[3] Some of these mods and their content are under free licences.[4]

[edit] History
The Spring Project was founded by Stefan Johansson with the goal to replace the TA engine. After some years in development, they have decided to release the game under the GPL. The decision to open source the project is a very difficult choice for Stefan Johansson and his team because they have spent a lot of time developing the engine.[5]
