Stendhal is a MMORPG written by members of the Arianne project. As of 2010-05-27, the latest version of the game is 0.83 released on April 30th, 2010. It is licensed under the GPL. It is written in the Java programming language and uses Java2D along with the engine Arianne, an online multiplayer framework.

Started in 2005, it was designed to stress test the Marauroa online engine server, part of the Arianne project.[1]

Like most MMORPG, Stendhal is a hack and slash game. Mainly you level up by fighting monsters and gradually acquire better armors, weapons, and skills. Stendhal has a large world to explore with some major cities. There are many Non Playing Characters to meet who offer help, quests and trade.

Combat in the world of Semos is tick based.

All players start in the city of Semos, a mining town populated by a mere 40 to 50 residents. To the north and to the west, lies a giant mountain range. The bank in Semos serve as the center of trade.

Richard Stallman is an NPC in Ados' bar. He tells player that the game they're playing is entirely free software.

Since it relies on Java WebStart technology, players can alway use the latest version available.

The website is connected to the game's database backend. Thus it display information about how many players online, the ranking of players, and other server statistics.
